
The Rev. Canon Debbie Royals

Biography
The Rev. Canon Debbie Royals, a member of the Pascua Yaqui Tribe from Tucson, is a sister, mother of two sons, and grandmother of four. She serves as an Episcopal priest, retreat leader, author and educator. Debbie earned a diploma in Nursing, a B.A. in Native American Spirituality and Theology from Prescott College, a Master of Divinity from Church Divinity School of the Pacific, and a Master of Arts in Religion and Society from the Graduate Theological Union.
She previously served as Canon for Native American Ministry in the Diocese of Arizona and is developing a new Indigenous church community called Four Winds to serve and uplift Indigenous people. For ten years, she led the Indigenous Theological Training Institute, partnering with Indigenous theologians to publish journals that center Native voices, wisdom, and lived experience. In addition to curriculum development, she has also contributed to books focused on prayer and daily meditations.
Debbie’s ministry is deeply rooted in addressing the spiritual, cultural, and social needs of Indigenous communities. She advocates for healing from historical trauma, preservation of language and cultural identity, equitable access to education and healthcare, and the strengthening of Indigenous leadership within the Church. She is committed to creating sacred spaces where Indigenous traditions are honored alongside Episcopal faith, fostering belonging, dignity, and self-determination. Her passion for restorative justice, reconciliation, and community-building is evident in every aspect of her life and work, as she continues to build bridges between cultures and generations.
