Encountering Other Religions: A Jewish Perspective

Code: IPI5/718 (VST)

Dates: July 6, 2020 - July 10, 2020

Time: 9:00 am for 3 Hours

How do we relate to other religions besides the extremes of pluralism or rejection? This is a crucial task in our era of religious diversity, globalization and post-secularism. The narrative of the class starts with the global trajectories created by the Vatican document Nostra Aetate which led to a series of positions called inclusivist, exclusivist, and pluralist. The class will survey Jewish texts on this topic from the Talmudic to the modern age, offering an overview of the contours of Jewish thought. From there we will explore comparative theology, commonality, appreciation, allophilia & enrichment of one’s own faith.
