Encountered by the Holy
June 14 to 15, 2026
What does it mean to be encountered by the holy—not as an abstract idea, but as an event of personal encounter that shapes how we speak, listen, and respond?
Encountered by the Holy brings together preaching, music, and artistic expression in a shared exploration of how holiness reveals itself in the world. Through worship, conversation, and reflection, the program attends not only to what is said about the holy, but to how it is encountered—in moments that interrupt, reorient, and invite a different way of being in the world.

Notes of Rest® invites the weary into the rest of God as practiced in the Bible and Black American music. The offering interweaves spiritual disciplines such as Sabbath, Sleep, and Sanctuary with the playing and history of Black American music. Braiding these “notes” equips participants to solo over the chord changes of their lives, harmonize their journeys with one another, and resolve to practice rest and music that unifies us with God, neighbour, and self.

Forum Worship Service at VST Epiphany Chapel
Sermon: God on an Oxcart based on 2 Samuel 6:1–11
Worship as attending to holiness rather than attempting to manage, grasp, or enlist God in service of our own agendas. The sermon reflects on David’s careless handling of the ark and the temptation faced by worship leaders to use worship to legitimate something other than sacred encounter.
7pm–9pm
Public Lecture with Craig Barnes at VST Epiphany Chapel
Seeking Beauty and Truth (based on Psalm 27:4)
Encountering God calls us to hold together both the beholding of divine beauty and the inquiry into divine truth. The lecture reflects on the tendency of churches to prioritize one at the expense of the other, and the importance of holding sacramental experience and theological proclamation in tandem.
