VST Life

If you are eager to learn, and want to explore in and out of the classroom, you are in good company here!

Vancouver School of Theology is committed to informing the growth of both the individual and the community’s spirituality. We believe that while theological education is a deeply personal undertaking, each journey is made purposeful in the company of others. Faith and maturity contribute to competence in ministry as well as knowledge and skills. Praying, eating, and playing together are an integral part of the School. The community at VST seeks to be a centre for creative growth in the love and service of Christ, while valuing and working alongside each students’ denomination and background.

Worship

Worship is one of the most important ways community is built at VST. Worship occurs at least twice a week: individual faith traditions worship together on Tuesdays, and the entire VST community worships together on Thursdays. We pray, reflect, sing and eat together. All students, faculty, and visiting church leaders share in worship.

On Thursdays the VST community gets to experience a wide variety of worship styles and traditions as each denomination and faith tradition shares leadership week to week.

Friends and visitors to VST are always welcome to join in worship, including Thursday soup lunch.

Shared Meals

Students, faculty, and staff have many opportunities to gather together in casual conversation over a shared meal. On Thursdays, a delicous soup and bun lunch is made available for everyone in the VST community. Community lunches are free of charge.

Social and Learning Activities

Throughout the year students, staff and faculty can attend research colloquia, Somerville Lecture, G. Peter Kaye Lectures, summer BBQs, and end of year parties. Past events have included lectures from Stanley Hauerwas, Sarah Coakley, and Willie Jennings.

VSTSA

The Vancouver School of Theology Student Association (VSTSA) is the hub for community life at VST. All students registered at VST are members of the Student Association and pay student fees each academic year.

From pub nights to rallies, volunteer projects to end of semester parties, and of course the free coffee in the student lounge – connecting with your peers in seminary will foster life long friendships and they’re here to help.

The VSTSA also has an executive team who plans community events and advocates to VST faculty as well as to the UBC AMS.
