TH5/726 – The Return of the Virtues
Week 2: July 16-20, 2018
Stanley Hauerwas will teach from his forthcoming book The Character of Virtue: Letters to a Godson (Eerdmans). The book compiles letters he wrote to Laurie Wells, his Godson, commending a virtue every year on the anniversary of Laurie’s baptism. Hauerwas will also do an evening lecture on Bonhoeffer entitled “Why Bonhoeffer Matters for Anyone (But Particularly for Pastors)”.
Hauerwas will spend 6 hours of class instruction time with students and 2 hours in the evening lecture and followup. The remaining 7 hours of classroom instruction will be offered by Ashley Moyse.
Stanley Hauerwas is the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at Duke University Divinity School. He was named “America’s best theologian” by Time magazine, and his book A Community of Character was chosen as one of the 100 most important religious books of the 20th century.
Ashley Moyse (PhD, Newcastle) is a theologian and ethicist. He holds research and teaching appointments at Vancouver School of Theology, Montreal School of Theology, Regent College, and the University of Divinity.
