Week 2: July 16-20, 2018

The divide has long been clear. Evangelicals care about conversion, church growth and individual salvation. Progressives care about systemic sin, social justice, and christian engagement with the world. These features, while exaggerated, have impacted the approaches each camp has towards preaching. But what if evangelism was no longer the property of conservative movements, and prophetic preaching no longer the enemy of growth. What if the passion and skills that resides in both approaches could be married to make a more impactful ministry? In this class we will explore and practice a progressive evangelical approach to preaching, one that takes serious both the individual salvation and engagement with the larger world.

Matt Miofsky is Lead Pastor of The Gathering United Methodist Church, Saint Louis, Missouri, a church begun in 2006 with over 1,000 people worshiping each week across four sites and 8+ services.
